Quarantinology

Hyperfunctional Logics for the Quarantined City

What will cities look like in the aftermath of Covid-19? What does the stress test of mass quarantine reveal about emerging dynamics in contemporary urbanism, from the platformization of public space to the new communalism of the precariat? Quarantinology is one answer to this question: a catalog of hyperfunctional logistics that explores the history of the quarantined city and speculates about its future.

Open Work

Extension to Metabolism

“Half a century ago, architecture became open-ended. Buildings would change and grow, architects argued, not unlike cities.
They embraced impermanence, promoted flexibility, timed obsolescence, and welcomed uncertainty,
just as Umberto Eco proclaimed the birth of the open work, and Roland Barthes pronounced the death of the author
. Architects also questioned authorship” Enrique Walker.

Re-Balanced

In the pursuit of perfect balance and momentum

The process of designing spinning tops always required a certain amount of trial and error relying on the intuition
of the tinkerer to balance them out. In turn, this has limited the designer to largely rotationally symmetric designs.
